What Is My MPRN Status?

To connect a gas supply to your premises, you will need an MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number). Your MPRN status determines whether your meter is live, disconnected, removed, or new.

Suppose you’re unsure about your MPRN as you are new to the premises. In that case, you should contact the MPAS (Meter Point Administration Service) or visit the Energy Networks Find My Operator Checker and enter your business postcode. Here, you will find out your unique MPRN, and its current meter status. You can also find out which gas supplier you are currently with and the dates they have supplied since. It will also highlight if you need a new MPRN and a meter installation.

Here’s our quick cheat sheet on understanding your meter status and what to do next! If you’re ready to go with your MPRN, you can start your switch to the best gas deal for your business:

DISCONNECTED

Unfortunately, your current MPRN has been decommissioned and there is no pipe connection. At Dealtopia we call this “Siteworks”, and it means you need to speak to a network operator to generate a new MPRN with your DNO and arrange a new connection.

REMOVED

There is no gas meter on your premises as it was removed.

To resolve this, you will need to arrange a gas live/dead check and if you need a meter larger than a U6 (G4) diaphragm meter you will need a GT1 Survey with your DNO.

What Types of Commercial Gas Meters Are Available?

Once you have your MPRN, the next step is to select which meter is right for you. Although there are more options available, some of the most popular include:

Standard Gas Meter

These meters are found in most businesses throughout the UK. With this option, you’ll pay the same amount for gas no matter the time of day. Therefore, if your company operates during traditional working hours, this may be a good option for you.

Smart Meters

These meters monitor your business’ gas and electricity usage and actively provide suggestions on how to cut down on your business energy costs. They can be useful for those just starting in the business world and determining how much they should be paying on average.

Multi-Rate Meters (Economy 7, Economy 10 Meters)

Although standard meters are great for those operating within traditional hours, multi-rate meters (also known as evening or weekend meters) often provide different rates depending on the time of day. Consequently, if your company does more business throughout the night (such as a restaurant) you may be able to have a cheaper gas rate during the day.

Gas Meter Types For Different Businesses

Working out the costs to install a commercial gas meter can vary greatly, depending on your consumption, peak usage, premise size, and your energy contract.

You may need to run large industrial equipment during certain times of the day or have multiple sites you need to manage. Considering these requirements will add to the cost of your gas meter installation.

Business Gas Meter Installation FAQs

What Is An MPRN Number?

When switching business gas suppliers, you might be asked to provide your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN). If you haven’t heard of this before, don’t worry, you’re not alone.

The MPRN is used to identify your gas supply point. This, in turn, is used to help calculate a fair bill for your gas usage.

How Do I Find My MPRN Number?

Locating your MPRN number is, fortunately, quite straightforward. You should be able to find it on your last gas bill. Alternatively, contact your current energy supplier and ask them to provide it.
