If you’re looking for a new business electricity meter, you must first identify your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number). This code is unique to your premises and should be on a recent electricity bill.

If your MPAN is not available, you should be able to find your MPAN through your current energy supplier. Always check your MPAN status to see your next steps for instant connection.

What Is My MPAN Status?

You will need an MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) for electricity to be connected to your premises. Your MPAN status determines whether your meter is live, disconnected, De-energized, or new.

Suppose you don’t know what your MPAN is as you are new to the premises. In that case, you should contact the MPAS (Meter Point Administration Service) or visit the Energy Networks Find My Operator Checker and enter your business postcode. Alternatively, you can ring the National Grid’s Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524

Here, you will find your unique MPAN and its current meter status. You can also find out which electricity supplier you are currently with and the dates they have supplied electricity since. The site will also highlight whether you need a new MPAN and meter installation.

Here’s our quick cheat sheet on understanding your meter status and what to do next! If you’re ready to go with your MPAN, you can start your switch to the best gas deal for your business:

NEW

You’ve arranged for a new MPAN, which will still need supplemental data, such as Profile Class and a Meter Time-Switch Code. Your service cable isn't quite installed yet, but it is scheduled.

Between 3-4 weeks before you get your service cable installed, the new MPAN can be activated. Now you can arrange an electricity meter installation

DISCONNECTED

Unfortunately, your current MPAN has been decommissioned and there is no service cable. At Dealtopia we call this “Siteworks”, and it means you need to speak to a network operator to generate a new MPAN with your DNO and arrange a new connection.

DE-ENERGISED

There is no electricity meter fuse as it was removed, however, the service cable might still be connected, which means the electricity supplier has revoked the meter and has updated ECOES to show it as de-energised.

To resolve this, you will need to get in touch with the supplier who arranged the removal as they need to inform ECOS to reinstate the connection.

What Types of Business Electricity Meters Are Available?

There are several types of commercial electricity meters available and here are some of your options:

Standard Business Electricity Meter

These meters run on a single value for your electricity throughout the day. Therefore, they are best suited to those firms which operate during traditional business hours.

HH Electricity Meters

An HH meter (or half-hourly meter) sends readings to your energy supplier every 30 minutes, ensuring the most accurate bills.

Multi-Rate Electricity Meters

These meters charge you at different rates depending on your usage. For example, in the case of a three-rate meter, this will give you a rate for peak time, off-peak, and then usually weekend use. They are ideal for businesses which are busiest during non-traditional working hours, such as pubs or restaurants. A two-rate meter has a lower tariff for nighttime.

Smart Meters

These meters send reports on your energy usage automatically to your energy provider. They also usually provide advice on how to cut your costs. As well as allowing for accurate billing, they are great for those looking to save money on their energy consumption.
